MISBO Board Officers

Philip CorkChair: Philip Cork, Saint Andrew's School
For the past 14 years, Philip has been the Associate Headmaster for Finance at Saint Andrew's School in Boca Raton, Florida. Prior to joining Saint Andrew’s, Philip held CFO positions with a number of health services companies in South Florida. He has also worked in other senior financial positions for companies including GE Capital Mortgage and Travelers Insurance. Philip worked in public accounting for 11 years with Price Waterhouse Coopers in Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S. He holds a B.A. in economics and geography from Exeter University, and a graduate certificate in business leadership for independent schools from Johns Hopkins University. Philip also serves on the board of the Florida Independent Colleges and Universities Risk Management Association.


Vice-Chair: Dr. Ryan Kelly, Carrollwood Day School
Ryan has been Head of School at Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, Florida since 2013. He has been working in education since 1998, having taught honors chemistry and mathematics in both charter and public schools, along with teaching IB chemistry and mathematics at Riverstone International School in Boise, Idaho. During his tenure in education, he has served as a Grade Level Chair, Department Chair, Division Head, and Assistant Head of School. He earned his B.S. in chemistry at the University of Oregon, an M.A. in curriculum and instruction from the University of Colorado, and an Ed.D. in educational and organizational leadership from the University of Pennsylvania.


Phil ZaubiTreasurer: Phil Zaubi, Porter-Gaud School
Phil has been involved with educational technology for schools in Costa Rica, Kentucky, and South Carolina for the past 15 years. He is currently in his 12th year at Porter-Gaud School in Charleston, South Carolina, where he is currently the Director of Technology. He also teaches a senior-level dual-credit computer science course through the College of Charleston and is involved in advancing computer science curriculum in high schools. He has presented at several conferences on various topics including successful technology integration, Google Apps for Education, and implementing a four-year high school computer science curriculum. Phil received his degree in computer science from the College of Charleston and his MBA from The Citadel.

Amy MadsenSecretary: Amy Madsen, Charlotte Country Day School
As Charlotte Country Day School’s first Human Resources Manager, Amy is involved with all areas of HR and serves on the school’s Strategic Planning and Health, Safety and Security Committees. Prior to joining Charlotte Country Day School in 2008, she served in HR roles with both Petro Express and Family Dollar, Inc. She attended UNC-Greensboro where she received her bachelor’s degree in business. Later, she obtained her SPHR and SHRM-SCP certifications.


Julie RayPast Board Chair: Julie Ray, Mount Paran Christian School
Julie is the Chief Financial Officer for Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia. She received her bachelor's degree in liberal arts from the University of Texas at Austin and received her master's degree in business administration from George Mason University with a focus in management and interest in organizational design and development. Julie worked in the international data communications industry for eight years with British Telecom, MCI, and Equant prior to joining Mount Paran Christian School in 2003.

Rick BettsRick Betts, St. Clement’s Parish School
Rick is currently the Head of School at St. Clement's Parish School in El Paso, Texas, a PK-8 Christian School. Prior to St. Clement's, he served as Head of School at St. Benedict's Episcopal School in Smyrna, Georgia. Rick has served in many capacities in independent schools for over 20 years, including 6th grade teacher, Administrator, Associate Head, and Interim Head. Rick is also an Accreditation Peer Review Team Chair for SAIS and has served on many accreditation visits throughout the southeast. Rick has prior board experience with Ivy Prep Academy Network in Atlanta, Georgia and consulting experience focused on board governance and best practices.

Chip BroadwayChip Broadway, Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia
Chip serves as the Vice President and Treasurer of the Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia, Inc. (CSDV), which owns and operates six schools in Virginia. During his 13 years with CSDV, Chip has worked in various capacities at four of the six schools. Prior to joining CSDV, Chip served as the Business Manager at the Collegiate School in Richmond, Virginia. Before entering the independent school business, he worked in a large public school system outside of Washington D.C. and he began his career in public accounting. Chip has also served on a number of other boards including the Virginia Council of Private Education, Boy Scouts, YMCA, other schools, and he has presented at various state and national associations.

Lee ConnerLee Conner, Woodward Academy
Lee has been at Woodward Academy since 2004 and currently serves as the Assistant Vice President of IT and Transportation. He is responsible for leading technology operations and support, the robust student transportation service, summer programs, and retail operations. Lee has an undergraduate degree in Decision Sciences, an MBA from Clemson University, and is a retired Major in the Air Force Reserve where he was a Logistics Plans and Readiness Officer.


Suzanna JembsySuzanna Jemsby, Galloway School
Suzanna has been the Head of School for the Galloway School in Atlanta, Georgia since July 2012. Prior to that, she was the Executive Director of The Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) and Head of Upper School at Atlanta International School (AIS). Before moving to the United States, she served as a teacher, grade head, and Acting Head of Secondary School at two international schools in Germany, and she began her career as a French and German teacher in London. Suzanna has a master's degree from Cambridge University in modern and medieval languages, and diplomas from the London College of Music. In addition to her professional accomplishments, she is a freelance cellist and a published author of short stories.


Rob McArthurRob McArthur, Asheville School

For the past decade, Rob has been a Chief Financial Officer at three independent schools serving at St. Paul’s School in Baltimore, Maryland, Carolina Day School in Asheville, North Carolina, and currently at the Asheville School in Asheville, North Carolina, a 9-12 boarding school which sits on 300 acres amid the rugged mountains of western North Carolina. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering and an MBA, he spent 24 years in management roles in the high-tech industry working for companies like IBM, Apple and Compaq.


Karen MooreKaren S. Moore, Shorecrest Preparatory School
In 2008, Karen joined the Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Florida as the school’s first Chief Financial Officer. She previously spent 10 years as an independent contractor serving not-for-profit businesses implementing financial systems. Prior to that, Karen was a Controller for Tampa General Healthcare, Inc. and a CPA for Ernst & Young and Grant Thornton. She serves on accreditation teams for FCIS and is an ambassador for NBOA.

Larry PittmanLarry Pittman, The Pine School
Larry is the Director of Finance and Operations at The Pine School in Hobe Sound, Florida. At The Pine School for 13 years, Larry has been a part of starting a high school and consolidating two campuses to the current K-12 campus. He has a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA in international business at NOVA Southeastern University. He is a Gulf War Veteran and volunteers regularly, assisting veterans and their families as well as international humanitarian efforts in Central America.

Deborah ReichelDeborah Reichel, Cary Academy
Deborah has been the Chief Financial Officer for Cary Academy in Cary, North Carolina since the school’s founding in 1997. Prior to this, she had 12 years of accounting, human resources, and business experience with public accounting, corporate, non-profit, and educational organizations. She holds a B.A. in economics and social sciences with a minor in business from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and an M.S. in accounting from Long Island University-C.W. Post. She is a Certified Public Accountant and a Senior Professional in Human Resources. 


Jeff RountreeJeff Rountree, The Lovett School
As the Director of Plant Operations, Jeff has over 40 years of experience with the facilities at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia. He leads a team of 72 staff members, which operates and maintains 100 acres with over 723,000 square feet of buildings. Along with the day-to-day operations, he also participates in the processes of planning, construction, capital renewal, and replacement of facilities. Jeff is an active member of both APPA and IFMA at local and national levels.

Richard SwindellRichard Swindell, Sidwell Friends School
Richard has held senior accounting, administration and leadership positions in fields which include mergers and acquisitions, government contracting, the dotcom industry and a restaurant franchise. He has been at Sidwell Friends School, a PK-12, co-educational Quaker day school with campuses in Washington, DC and Bethesda, Maryland since 2003 and currently serves as the Director of Business Operations. He is a graduate of The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Georgetown University.


Genie TannerGenie Tanner, University School of Nashville
Genie is the Human Resources Director at University School of Nashville, where she has worked for the past 16 years. Genie holds an M.Ed. in human resources development from Vanderbilt University, is a national facilitator for the National School Reform Faculty and a Rule 31 listed mediator, and has earned both SPHR and SHRM-CP certifications. In addition to her work at USN, she is the HR Consultant for Knowledge Academies, a public charter school. She is currently working toward a graduate certificate in conflict management.


Debra WilsonDebra Wilson, NAIS
Since 2000, Debra has served as general counsel for the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS). There, she is the primary authority on legal issues related to independent schools, writing advisories, offering general legal information for schools, speaking in the field, coordinating amicus briefs on cases of industry importance, and referring schools to counsel as needed. She directs the in-house legal needs of NAIS, manages the legal function, and advises internal staff and board on key legal issues related to strategies and decisions. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of the South and a law degree from the University of South Carolina at Columbia.


Emeritus Director

Robert "Bob" RobinsonBob Robinson, Charlotte Latin School (retired)
Bob is the retired Business Manager of Charlotte Latin School in Charlotte, North Carolina and is serving his second term as an Emeritus Director with the MISBO board. He was one of the original faculty members of Charlotte Latin and was named as the Business Manager in 1978. Bob is also on the board of the Carolina Cooperative Federal Credit Union and Charlotte Latin Board of Visitors.
